why do we like looking at water?

A large number of species have been shown to have a preference for biological motion over non-biological motion. Even quite abstract patterns like moving dots are perceived as "alive" if they move in a certain fashion.

Once I collaborated with Rik Suys on some short movies of abstractions of light reflections on water. Perhaps these light on water movements resemble biological motion, which may partly explain why people like to look at water movements.

It is fascinating how even abstract patterns can appear alive when they move in a certain way.
